High Quality image browsing for the Web

How can we browse very large images on the web without downloading the whole file initially?

How can image servers maintain compatibility with viewers into the future?

This screen shot shows our early browser looking at a 290MByte image file.

This research was started in the Viseum and ACOHIR projects. It involves image capture, calibration, compression, serving and browsing. An image server can provide image tiles to a Java browser to allow people to quickly pan/zoom around an image of any size. It also allows browsing of object views. See our Web conference papers ( WWW7 , WWW9) for more details. The multiresolution tiled jpeg in TIFF image format I designed is often used on the server (it speeds-up access to multiple resolutions).
