New School scholarships to benefit undergraduates from 2006
The School of Electronics and Computer Science has announced that it will be offering 25 scholarships of £2000 per annum from October 2006. The scholarships will be offered to new first-year undergraduates to the School on the basis of academic merit, and will be held for each year of the student's degree programme, provided that satisfactory performance is achieved each year. The total annual commitment by the School will therefore be £200,000.
'In addition to providing financial support, we will also be looking at other areas of the School's activities where we can support students' learning,' said Professor Wendy Hall, Head of School. 'We already provide top-class facilities in our computing and electronics labs, and we are constantly adding to our equipment and services for students' advantage. We will also be appointing a second Senior Tutor in the School to provide valuable advice and pastoral support for our students.
'Students who come here can be confident that they are receiving the best possible education in their subject', she added. 'Not only are we the top-rated research school in the country, but we have also consistently received the highest gradings for teaching quality. We have an excellent student community and an extremely positive spirit of co-operation within the School. We will be working hard to ensure that we offer a study experience for all our students that matches the best in the world.'
In line with Government policy the School is extending its outreach work in schools and the community to underline the importance of science and technology. 'It's vital that school students are encouraged to take maths and science subjects at GCSE and A Level,' said Professor Hall, 'and we are aiming to provide materials that will help school students in their studies, and support their teachers.'
