The Engineering Doctorate (EngD)

Training for a leadership position in industry

The EngD is a four-year doctoral research programme with real added value. It provides leading-edge business and technical expertise alongside doctoral-level research skills, thus equipping ambitious and able research engineers with the skills needed for a senior management position in engineering research .

The EngD crucially involves a close link with a sponsoring company. EngD students, termed Research Engineers (REs), are supported by a generous tax-free stipend; they must also be sponsored by a company with a research and development base in the UK. REs spend at least half of the four years undertaking research into real industrial problems with the sponsoring company. Taught courses are normally undertaken during the first two years of the programme while students are based at the University. Courses include advanced-level engineering modules, MBA modules from the University’s School of Management, and specially-designed generic skills courses.

The theme of the ECS EngD programme is: Knowledge and Systems Engineering. There are also exciting opportunities to undertake an Engineering Doctorate in the new field of Web Science, as part of the Web Science Research Initiative.

The EngD really caught my eye as an ideal midpoint between academia and a straight-laced job; I can get on with the research that I find so fascinating, knowing that it's of genuine use to my sponsor company. (The extra money is nice, too!) It's a super way to get a doctorate, as you finish with four years of part-time (or two years of full-time) work on your CV, as well as the qualification.

Clare Hooper is undertaking an Engineering Doctorate, sponsored by IBM

The EngD Centre in the University is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which underwrites 10 new studentships for UK students each year through the Collaborative Training Account (CTA). Each successful application will be supported by the payment of tuition fees, a generous stipend, provision of MBA and generic skills training, and a travel allowance.

Applicants for a place on the Engineering Doctorate programme need to provide the following information: a short description defining a general research area identified by the sponsoring organization; the name of at least one University research supervisor; the name of at least one research supervisor from the sponsoring organization; a commitment in writing from the sponsoring organization to resource the research over the four years.
