About

Prof. Jize Yan, an expert in Sensor Technology and Microsystems at the University of Southampton, holds a BEng from Tsinghua University and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. As a PI and co-I, he's been awarded £28M+ in research grants, published 100+ peer-reviewed publications, and earned multiple best-paper awards. He leads a dedicated team of 10+ PhD students and Post-Docs, collaborating with industry leaders to address vital metrology challenges in infrastructure health, battery safety, space observatory and quantum technology.

Jize's pioneering research has set world records, driving innovations in Meta-lenses and Vortex-beam sensors, Distributed fiber optic sensors, MEMS/Optomechanical/Optical sensors, Wireless sensor networks, Energy harvesting for sensors and Cleanroom fabrication. His research also develops precise instruments to explore quantum theory's boundaries, serving as a testbed for theoretical predictions, such as gravity-related collapse models, topological quantum computers, and new frontiers in holographic duality.

With a portfolio of 10+ patents, Jize co-founded spin-out companies (8power, Wisen Innovation, Traco) and facilitated technology transfer (Silicon Microgravity, NXP Semiconductors, Cementation Skanska), resulting in £16M+ income streams. Invited by venture capital panels, he evaluated 30+ startup proposals across various funding rounds. At the School of Electronics and Computer Science, he led and upgraded the Internal Grant-Application Review process and serves as the EEE Impact Champion for REF2029 and an ECS mentor for commercialization. He is also an Associate Editor for five international journals and a member of the EPSRC Review College. In education, he collaborates with leading AI education enterprises to champion AI technologies and promote future AI education standards.

Jize prioritizes the development of his team, resulting in their rapid career growth. His former students achieved full professorships at esteemed universities at young ages, while others secured tenure-track positions at prestigious institutions like UC Berkeley and EPFL. Several seamlessly transitioned into permanent academic roles directly after PhD studies. One student was honored with knighthood. Moreover, successful spin-off companies led by his former students, including one with a significant stake in the UK market, have emerged under his guidance. Jize welcomes PhD and fellowship applicants and is dedicated to assisting candidates in securing permanent academic positions or pursuing other career aspirations.
