Dr Kai Yang

I received my BEng degree in Material Engineering from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Beijing, China, in 2004, where I studied for the MSc from 2004 to 2005. I obtained my Ph.D in 2009 from the University of Leeds. My PhD topic was “Reactive Dye Ink-jet Printing on Wool Fabrics" (funded by China - Australian Wool Innovation Network).

I am currently a Senior Research Fellow in Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton, UK. My research interests include printed electronics on textile, novel inks/pastes formulation, textile coloration and functional treatment, biocompatible materials, fabric based medical device.

Since 2009, I have been working on several research projects on e-textile mainly include MICROFLEX (EU FP7), Energy Harvesting Materials for Smart Fabrics and Interactive Textiles (EPSRC), Fabric Based Medical Device (Wessex Medical Research Grant) and Smart Multi-functional Materials (DSTL).

I have successfully developed a number of key state-of-the-art inks and pastes for printed electronic textile application. These know-how technologies are the key intellectual property of the university spin-out company called Smart Fabric Inks Ltd I co-founded with my colleagues in 2011.
