Description

Aims

Success in degree level study and then in employment demands not only excellent technical skills, but also the ability to work with information and communicate and present coherent and engaging arguments, both written and in face to face presentations. Employers put high value on these skills and accrediting bodies such as the BCS require that programmes address skill development. People develop these skills throughout their lives, and the aim of this course is to present students with the opportunity to reflect on their current skills and to refine and improve them.

  • How to construct a technical report, using appropriate referencing and citation.

Learning activities include

Throughout the programme, you will be encouraged to develop skills through practical exercises, case studies, role plays and discussion groups which in some cases require preparation prior to the seminar. Individual reading is an essential part of the implementation strategy. You will be given short tasks to perform each week in relation to the unit and these will assist you to prepare for the assessments.

Feedback and student support during module study

Students are encouraged to discuss the course contents with members of their tutor group and with their personal tutor. Small group seminars are used to practice reflection and develop better communication with the tutors.

Relationship between the teaching, learning and assessment methods and the planned learning outcomes

The design of a personal web page and a CV enables students to consider different ways they may wish to present themselves to different audiences. Producing a CV encourages reflection and audit of skills.

The second coursework tests students research and library skills, argumentation skills and written presentation.

The group presentation assesses both group working skills and verbal presentation skills.
