SUN-based multimedia server

Funded by JREI in 1999, with the aid of 50% hardware sponsorship from SUN and IBMs donation of DB2. It is to support research and provide a repository for multimedia. It is intended that large collections of multimedia are stored and referenced in the database for easy access. Access is available for any staff/researchers in ECS.

Originally two Sun servers each with four 400MHz UltraSparc CPUs and 2 GBytes RAM, linked with Gigabit/s ethernet. The main /data storage is on two A1000 hardware RAID 5 boxes each with six 18GB disks.

Ernie
Provides some mass storage and a Solaris host for low-cpu intensive services. It also has an /data/incoming area for temporary media and streaming buffers etc. - keep that clean!

It runs:

  • Real streaming software for video.
  • DB2 database and a system to manage the multimedia data.
  • Apache
  • IIP image server
  • tape backup on DLT with jukeboxes
Eric the second system has been decommissioned

Eric Morcambe and Ernie Wise were comedians who brought as big a smile to many faces as I had when opening the SUN boxes for this kit
