Our MEng in Electronic Engineering with Photonics includes the core learning of the BEng Electronic Engineering and MEng Electronic Engineering programmes to give you a thorough grounding in the field. You then have the opportunity to specialise and gain a greater understanding of the practical industrial applications of photonics. Key areas of study include:
- Optical Communications
- Fabrication and Microscopy
- Nanoelectronic and Quantum Devices
- Photonic Materials including Silicon Photonics
- Metamaterials, Nanophonics and Plasmonics
- Digital Coding and Transmission
These topics are taught in collaboration with the Optoelectronics Research Centre, which has an international reputation in the field of Photonics. Many of the major developments in today’s photonics technology were pioneered by ORC researchers, including the optical fibres and amplifiers that form the hardware backbone of the Internet and the fibre laser which is used for a variety of applications ranging from manufacturing to defence.
Our MEng in Electronic Engineering with Photonics will provide you with the skills to work in any area of the electronics industry. We have excellent relationships with employers, and have our own Careers Hub website. We also run an annual careers fair.

Our MEng in Electronic Engineering with Photonics is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and we are a member of the UK Electronics Skills Foundation.
Students undertake four years of study. Each year there are compulsory modules. However, the degree has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests.
