Daniel Spencer

Academic Staff

After completing a degree in electronic engineering and PhD at Southampton, I have been a lecturer in the Nano group of ECS since 2012.  My research interests are into microelectronic and lab-on-a-chip systems for medical and healthcare applications.  During my PhD I developed microelectronic devices for high speed characterisation of biological cells and I am collaborating with industry partners to incorporate the technology into commercial devices.  I have been exploring applying this technology to portable point of care diagnostic test devices and have demonstrated CD4 count for HIV/Aids monitoring and for the characterisation of tumour cells.  I am currently researching combining characterisation systems with sample pre-processing techniques for “sample-in, answer-out” diagnostic platforms.  I am module leader for the fourth year Bionanotechnology course and I lecture on the Lab-on-a-chip and Biosensors modules.  I also supervise bionanotechnology based Part III and MSc individual projects.
