Dr Jonathan Butement PhD, BSc

Research Fellow ORC

Jonathan is a research fellow at the ORC, UoS with cross-disciplinary expertise having studied Biomedical Science at undergraduate and completing a PhD in Optoelectronics in 2016. His work is focused on using integrated optical technology and microfluidics for biomedical applications.

Projects include; development of a multiangle scattering microflow cytometer which uses integrated optical waveguides for low cost and highly accurate measurement of submicron particle size ( https://doi.org/10.1039/C9LC01182J ). Microfluidics for high speed cell sorting and fine temporal control of biological reactions. Most recently his work is focused on integrated light guiding technology for the delivery of antimicrobial blue light to biomedical devices in-situ.

Jonathan has a broad skill base in optical theory and design, microfabrication, fluidics, electronics and experimental biology. He has been the researcher co-I on a £20K Higher Education Innovation Fund project from HEFCE which in part contributed to a successful bid for £1M of EPSRC funding. JB has also been awarded £15K as PI from HEFCE for research into anitmicrobial light guiding technology in biomedical devices. In 2019 JB was funded to attend the British Council/Newton fund, UK-India Researcher Links Multi-disciplinary Workshop on TB Diagnostics and AMR.
