Dr Kai Yang 

I received my BEng degree in Material Engineering from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Beijing, China, in 2004, where I studied for the MSc from 2004 to 2005. I obtained my Ph.D in 2009 from the University of Leeds. My PhD topic was “Reactive Dye Ink-jet Printing on Wool Fabrics" (funded by China - Australian Wool Innovation Network).

I am currently a Principal Research Fellow in Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton, UK. I have been awarded an EPSRC-UKRI Innovation Fellowship to develop “Advanced e-textiles for Wearable Therapeutics”. The Fellowship enables me to lead a multi-disciplinary team to work with project partners to develop cutting edge e-textiles technologies for therapeutic applications, with the initial application focus on the osteoarthritis knee joint pain which effects 4.7 million people in the UK. I am also PI on the MRC SMARTmove grant to develop a textile based wearable Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) training system for stroke upper limb rehabilitation.

I am passionate about market and end users oriented research. The aim of my research is to address the unmet market needs using e-textiles technologies through collaboration. My research interests include e-textiles, wearables therapeutics (e.g.stroke rehabilitation, pain relief, muscle exercise), ink formulations, printed electronics, electrodes, materials and fabrication.
