In my career at Southampton I helped to design and develop the innovative online MA in English Language Teaching (a Southampton-British Council collaboration), and have also been involved in the production of Massive Open Online Courses on the FutureLearn platform. I have taught academic writing extensively in both face-to-face and online contexts in higher education, and continue to work in roles related to academic communication for students and academics. 

I am a PhD researcher in the Web Science Doctoral Training Centre, focusing on the work of Learning Designers in online education. My research draws on Celia Whitchurch's idea of a 'third space' in higher education, in which 'blended professionals' operate across conventional academic and professional boundaries. My work aims to extend understandings of these blended roles by considering how both social and technical factors in online education construct the space in which Learning Designers operate.  


Research interests

I'm interesting in teaching and learning in higher education in face-to-face, online and blended contexts. I'm also interested in the work of Learning Designers, Learning Technologists and others who interact with online technologies in education. I also work with students and academics to improve their academic writing, and do research in academic language and literacies.
