Dr Vinita Mittal

Vinita received her master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 2012. Vinita was awarded her PhD entitled ‘Mid-infrared integrated photonics devices for biosensing’, under an ERC grant ‘WIPFAB’ in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at University of Southampton, UK, in 2017. During the course of her PhD, she worked on optimising novel chalcogenide materials for integrated photonic devices and demonstrated multimode wide-band transparent waveguides with state-of-the-art low losses and chemical sensing using simple model chemical systems in the mid-infrared region.

She has won two first prizes during her PhD in student poster competitions. She received an honour for outstanding achievement as Social officer for OSA and SPIE student chapter, University of Southampton. She was also awarded SPIE officer student travel grant to attend Leadership program at one of the leading photonics conferences where she represented University of Southampton student chapter in optics and photonics.

She is currently working as a Research Associate in Silicon Photonics group at the Zepler Institute for Photonics and Nanoelectronics, ZIPN. Her role is to develop 3D integration of electronics (CMOS circuitry) and photonics (silicon on insulator platform) using vertical coupling for applications in interconnects and data processing at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Her current research also involves building devices using novel material systems compatible with silicon photonics platform such as amorphous Si, amorphous Ge and SiGe.

At the beginning of her post-doctoral research, she was awarded £12k from an internal EPSRC Platform Grant “Innovation Reserve” fund based on the theme ‘electronics and photonics convergence’ to work independently to investigate a new sensor device. She has successfully led the project with the first demonstration of optical detection of model proteins on germanium waveguides in the 5-10µm spectral region. This successful proof of concept has motivated her to further pursue her idea to interface photonics with biological sciences to drive this research into sensing of clinically relevant diseases such as Alzheimer’s, and a wide-range of new applications for bio-photonics in healthcare using silicon photonics. She was invited to attend fully funded UK-India Researcher Links 4-day Multi-disciplinary Workshop on Tuberculosis Diagnostics’ organised by the Newton Fund and Royal Society of Chemistry, held in Chennai, India, in 2019.

She is an active committee member of Zepler Institute Equality, Diversity and Inclusion panel and Zepler Institute Athena Swan team which won a Bronze award in 2019.

Her interests lie in exploring novel photonics materials, designing photonics circuits, and on-chip molecular spectroscopy, neurodegenerative diseases.
