HH36 BEng Mechatronic Engineering (3 Years)

This three-year BEng in Mechatronic Engineering degree is available for entry in autumn 2017. Introducing your degree

Mechatronic engineering combines electrical and mechanical engineering to find solutions for systems that rely on mechanical elements, electrical power, sensing and control.

Please note, this degree was formerly known as Electromechanical Engineering.

Mechatronic engineering meets the increasing demand from industry for engineers with cross-disciplinary skills in the fields of robotics, flexible manufacturing, electromechanical power systems and electrical power transmission and distribution systems. 

You will investigate the problems of combining electrical and mechanical components into electromechanical devices or systems such as micro-machines, electric vehicles and powerful industrial robots.

Project work begins in the first year and continues with design and build tasks in every year of your degree. You will get the chance to exercise your creative talent, deploy your skills and exploit the knowledge gained to design electromechanical devices.

Key areas of study include:

  • theoretical and computational aspects of electromagnetism
  • robotics, communications and control
  • mechanics and engineering design

Students are eligible for funding under the Power Academy Scheme.

We have excellent relationships with employers, and have our own Careers Hub website. We also run an annual careers fair.

Our BEng Mechatronic Engineering degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and we are a member of the IET Power Academy bringing opportunities for generous scholarships.

Students undertake three years of study. Each year there are compulsory modules. However, the degree has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests.

GCSE GCSE Mathematics and English at grade C or above
GCE A-level AAA in three A Levels (or equivalent qualifications), including mathematics and physics. In some cases, physics may be substituted by further mathematics or electronics.

General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted as one of the three A levels.

Alternative Qualifications We welcome applications from candidates offering qualifications other than A and AS levels (including BTEC Higher National Diploma, European Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificate and Scottish Highers). You will be expected to attain an equivalent standard (or higher) to an A level applicant.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will be required to pass an approved English test. We normally ask for a score of IELTS 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each competency. For information on other accepted English language tests, please visit www.southampton.ac.uk/admissions_language.

Foundation Year

If you want to study for a degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Geophysics but you did not choose the required subjects at A level, our Foundation Year may be of interest to you. The Engineering/Physics/Maths/Geophysics Foundation Year is a one-year full-time course integrated with a further three, four or five-year degree course. Find out more about the Foundation Year.

Mature Applicants

We welcome applications from mature students. If you will be over 21 at the start of your proposed degree programme, you may be eligible for exemption from our normal entry requirements. However, you will be required to provide evidence of having completed recent study (eg Access, Return to Study, Open University foundation courses) and of your capacity to pursue the course.

Employability is embedded into modules from the first year onwards and right from the first lecture.We explain the degree skills which are being taught throughout the modules and offer a number of optional employability modules.

The technical skills you will obtain are in high demand, as are the skills of understanding and analysing problems, together with communicating the results.

We have excellent relationships with employers and our own ECS Careers Hub offers a vital resource. Jevan Bryant, an MEng graduate of Electromechanical Engineering, now works at SELEX Galileo. "The atmosphere in ECS is always collaborative,” he said. “If someone had a problem, within a minute a group of five or six would have gathered round to discuss different solutions.”

Tuition fees

Course fees for 2017/18 full-time UK and EU undergraduate students are typically £9,250 per year. Tuition fees for international students differ between each course. Most part-time courses cost 50% of the full-time fee.

StationeryYou will be expected to provide your own day-to-day stationery items, e.g. pens, pencils, notebooks, etc). Any specialist stationery items will be specified under the Additional Costs tab of the relevant module profile.
TextbooksWhere a module specifies core texts these should generally be available on the reserve list in the library. However due to demand, students may prefer to buy their own copies. These can be purchased from any source.

Some modules suggest reading texts as optional background reading. The library may hold copies of such texts, or alternatively you may wish to purchase your own copies. Although not essential reading, you may benefit from the additional reading materials for the module.
Printing and Photocopying CostsIn the majority of cases, coursework such as essays; projects; dissertations is likely to be submitted on line. However, there are some items where it is not possible to submit on line and students will be asked to provide a printed copy.
