World-class facilities and opportunities 

The facilities really stand out as being world-class and the Undergraduate laboratories have a fantastic variety of workstations with lots of space. I have enjoyed the practical laboratory projects which you do throughout the course – especially the group project and individual project in my second and third year.

There are lots different modules on offer and I took the opportunity to do some that weren’t related to electronics like Business, Management and Law, as well as Computer Science modules like Cryptography, Computational Finance and Secure Systems.

Industry connections

Throughout my course the department has encouraged regular industry contact which has given me some important employability skills. I’ve had the opportunity to undertake two internships in completely different sectors, including the UKESF Scholarship scheme - a real highlight for me was coming runner-up in the UKESF Scholar of the Year award. I also received a scholarship through the Royal Academy of Engineering, so I have been able to attend conferences worldwide, and have been involved in numerous industry-sponsored competitions, events and talks. Through all these opportunities I feel like I gained some real world insight into choosing what to do when I graduate.

Life at Southampton

My course has been very intense, but there is still plenty of time to see friends and visit family. I joined lots of societies and have done so many things I never thought I would do. The campus is great with lots to do nearby and there is a huge variety of halls on offer, so something to suit everyone. My halls were really sociable and I still meet up regularly with my old flat mates even though some of them have already graduated.

I feel like all my experiences at University, from my extra-curricular activities through to the department’s career advisor, have helped me develop as a person and decide what I want to do as a career. I have chosen to work as a Management Consultant for a few years, to get a broad industry and business knowledge, before hopefully starting my own Electronics business, where my technical knowledge from my degree will play a key role.
