The University of Southampton

Nikolas Tsagkopoulos MSc Artificial Intelligence, 2019

My first degree was in Physics but I wanted to take a postgraduate degree so I could specialise in a scientific subject that I could use in my future career. I liked learning about signal processing and electronics as an undergraduate so I chose an MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Interestingly, some of my lecturers also have backgrounds in Physics. Of course, I was also impressed with Southampton’s reputation for the subject.

AI is a fast-changing subject and there is always more to learn as the technology is moving so quickly. I know I came to the right university because lecturers are always up to date with the latest developments. The facilities are the best I’ve ever seen

To start with, I was anxious that I might have some challenges because my background wasn’t in computer science but I worked hard and kept up with the others. The Director of Programmes was very helpful and supported me to keep up with the workload.

The University offers a lot of activities and social events, especially at the beginning of your studies, to help you integrate as soon as possible. The campus is very nice and you feel secure there.

My advice to other students is to work hard and stick to your dream. ECS will even help you if you want to start up your own company, provided you’ve got a good idea.
