Professor Dame Wendy Hall

Professor Dame Wendy Hall is to lead a major UK government review on how to capitalise on the country’s status as a world-leader in the science underpinning Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

Dame Wendy, recently appointed Regius Professor of Computer Science at the University, will jointly lead the review of the AI sector with Jérôme Pesenti, CEO of BenevolentTech and a world-leading pioneer in the commercialisation of AI.

The review will consider how Government and industry could work together to better support this technology and further grow the sector, from early research to commercialisation. Estimates suggest that AI could add in the region of £654 billion to the UK economy by 2035.

Supported by the departments of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Culture, Media and Sport, the review is part of the government’s new Digital Strategy published today (1 March 2017). The Strategy builds on plans set out in the Government’s Industrial Strategy to capitalise on Britain’s existing strengths and back new technologies in areas where the UK can take a lead.

Dame Wendy said: "Our scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs are at the forefront of the development of artificial intelligence and I’m looking forward to exploring how industry and government can work together to support the technology in the UK."

Culture Secretary Karen Bradley added: "Technologies like AI have the potential to transform how we live, work, travel and learn, and I am pleased that Professor Dame Wendy Hall and Jérôme Pesenti will be leading this review. It’s great that Government and industry will be working together to drive growth in the sector, to realise all the economic and social benefits for the UK."

Dr Rob Maunder and Dr Taihai Chen

AccelerComm, a spinout company from Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton is in Barcelona this week for the Mobile World Congress - the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry.

AccelerComm is the brainchild of Dr Rob Maunder and Dr Taihai Chen, academics from ECS and its products are 5G-ready error correction decoders for wireless systems.

The introduction of 5G wireless systems will allow us to download and view data ten times faster – with ten times less lag – than we currently can on our mobile devices. This cutting-edge technology could be at our fingertips in five years’ time if superfast hardware is advanced to meet high-tech demands. Rob and Taihai are helping this goal become a reality.

Mobile systems require error correction decoders to process information, however current state-of-the-art decoders will be too slow for the next wave of wireless technology. Rob, an expert in wireless communication algorithms and hardware, has produced 5G-ready error correction decoders which he is spinning out through AccelerComm.

In this video, Rob explains how AccelerComm’s turbo decoder works:

AccelerComm has been five years in development, and draws on the company’s 50 person-years of turbo coding experience and research. They secured a grant through Innovate UK in 2016, enabling them to commercialise the technology. They also received investment from IP Group and gained support from Future Worlds, the University’s on-campus start-up incubator.

Rob and the team are exhibiting at Mobile World Congress 2017, as part of the UK Trade and Industry stand, where they will be demonstrating their ultra-low latency turbo decoder.
