The Gait Tunnel was previously the only facility in the UK specifically arranged to produce state-of-the-art multiview image sequences of walking people to construct a real-time 3D computer vision silhouette. It could take measurements that recognised the totally unique gait patterns that give us all our own walking fingerprint.
The Gait Tunnel served as a research tool to investigate new ideas: for example work was previously undertaken to develop a way to reconstruct the footage seen in a surveillance camera so that it appears from a different viewpoint.

Businesses could use the tunnel as a basis of a system to recognise people as they walk through, or to analyse them for gait abnormalities.
This was a real-time 3D computer vision. We did not use a Kinect or a structured light system; it was like a 3D video recorder.
The gait laboratory received extensive media coverage, including on BBC News, Newsnight and ABC Australia.
The Cyber Security Laboratory is a state-of-the-art, dedicated space in which students can safely engage in cyber related activities, including malware detection and deactivation, and penetration testing, in a contained and controlled environment without possible impact to other campus networks.
The lab is provided to all MEng and MSc Cyber Security students to undertake coursework and project work. Southampton offers an MEng in Computer Science with Cyber Security as well as an MSc in Cyber Security. Both degrees include certification by the National Cyber Security Centre and the University is recognised as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research.
This lab is primarily used for teaching but offers suitable space for researchers to study if required. The University is recognised as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research and has a dedicated Cyber Security Research Group.
In addition to its core teaching function the Cyber Security Lab offers a suitable space for CPD training. The Cyber Security Academy will be starting a CPD programme using these facilties.
