My eight-week UKESF summer placement at Collins Aerospace gave me a lot of new technical knowledge and increased my confidence as an engineer. I benefited so much from working with different people and learning from their experiences in the aerospace sector.
I chose Southampton for many reasons, one of which being the quality of its teaching facilities within the department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS).
After I visited Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at a University of Southampton open day, I just knew it was the right university for me. The ECS electronics labs were undoubtedly the best I’d seen at any university, and I could really see myself joining the ECS community.
I chose University of Southampton because it offered all the things I was looking for – a variety of modules, great employability rates, modern computer labs and a relaxed and friendly environment.
It is the industrial experience you gain with a UKESF scholarship that can give you the edge over other students, making you unique from the perspective of an employer. UKESF enables you to develop your skills by experiencing first-hand what it is like to work in the electronics sector, meet like-minded people and network with industry colleagues.
Coming to Southampton has been the best choice I could have made and it has made me grow in a lot of ways: not only have I learnt a lot about software and become a valuable engineer, but I have also gained experience working on my own and as part of a team.
The University provides one of the best engineering degrees in the UK, especially electronics, which is rated as best in the country.
Every day of research is a world-first, I am witnessing confidential engineering work on a daily basis.
The workload of my course is challenging but rewarding. We covered so much material in the first year - I am amazed when I look back and reflect on how much I have accomplished!
I would love to see the gender gap in engineering shift as more girls consider maths and physics as a rewarding and exciting career prospect.
The facilities in the Electrical Engineering Department are world class and I had a dedicated work-space in the lab for my projects. The staff are always very helpful if you need a special component or get stuck on something.
I would really recommend Southampton as a great place to study - you get to meet lots of people from all over the world and the quality of the staff and facilities is excellent.

Graduate employers are keen to employ ECS students because it has a worldwide reputation for high calibre students that get a good mix of practical, design and project work.
My supervisors both on my BEng and my PhD were excellent in their fields and this raises the expectations from their students. If you are choosing Computer Science I wouldn’t know a better place to study than Southampton.
I have thoroughly enjoyed studying, researching and working here and would encourage other potential students to consider the University. A degree from Southampton is a great start to a career.

The knowledge I acquired at the University of Southampton easily allowed me to find a job as soon as I went back home to Azerbaijan after graduation, in one of the leading IT companies, AtaTechnology. I was working as a full-stack Web Developer applying my knowledge gained at the University in real-life projects.
Your few years at University are the most precious and privileged opportunity that you'll probably ever get. Use every moment of your time there to discover yourself and your potential.
I am quite sure that the knowledge and skills I have gained while studying at Southampton and the high employability of Southampton’s graduates will make me ready and fit for the next step of my journey.
